Bell Helicopter to open factory in Louisiana

Fort Worth-based Bell Helicopter will open a plant in Louisiana where it will build it new SLS helicopter line.

The factory will be at Lafayette Regional Airport. The company said the project will create 115 new direct jobs that will average $55,000 a year, plus benefits.

Bell will invest $11.4 million in equipment and tooling at the plant.

The SLS, or Short Single Light, helicopter is a contemporary version of the aircraft created by the company more than 50 years ago as the JetRanger, Bell said. It is a five-seat, single-engine, turbine helicopter.

Bell announced its plan to re-enter the SLS market at the Paris Air Show in June.

Bell Helicopter is a wholly owned subsidiary of Textron Inc.
