It’s no secret that the Oil Center has transformed from the primarily energy-related business base of its early days to one that is more health care and retail oriented today. In 1996, UL Lafayette’s Community Design Workshop completed an urban design project for the Oil Center; however, at the time, there was not a driving force in place to guide efforts in implementing suggestions presented in the final report. Because community and business leaders see the benefit of planned and thought-out development, now is the perfect time to address the future of the Oil Center. Lafayette General Medical Center and the Lafayette Economic Development Authority partnered to take the lead on the development of a comprehensive master plan for the Oil Center. The Community Design Workshop updated and expanded their 1996 report. The resulting report will be the first step in the creation of an overall master plan for future development, renovation and refurbishment of the Oil Center. We would like to thank all of the stakeholders— business and property owners, residents and interested citizens— who participated throughout the process.
