Acadiana Culture

Acadian Village

Acadian Village offers a unique view of the Acadian lifestyle of years gone by through the replication of a latter 1800 Acadian village. To learn more about Acadian Village, a museum of authentic Acadian homes, call 337-981-2364 or visit their website.

Vermilionville

Vermilionville authentically portrays a way of life preserved with a distinctly French accent.  Situated on the banks of the Bayou Vermilion, this Cajun/Creole heritage and folklife park recreates life in the Acadiana area between 1765 and 1890. The beautiful grounds, which are laid out as an historic village, contain eighteen structures, including six restored original homes.  In most of the structures, costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts or musical styles. Call toll free @ 1-866-99BAYOU or visit their website.

St. John Cathedral, Museum, Oak, & Cemetery

The church parish was founded in 1821. The Dutch Romanesque architecture of the cathedral highlights this 1918 cathedral built on the site of Jean Mouton's original chapel. The nearby oak tree is said to be 500 years old! The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. Noon and 1 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is located at 914 St. John Street in downtown Lafayette. Their phone number is 337-232-1322 and check out their website here.

Jean Lafitte National Park Acadian Cultural Center

Located near the Vermilionville Living History Museum in Lafayette, is the Acadian Cultural Center belonging to the Jean Lafitte National Park System. It offers exhibits regarding a variety of Cajun and Creole-related topics. A major attraction of the center is a documentary on Cajun and Creole culture, shown regularly in a two-hundred-seat theater. The Acadian Cultural Center is located at 501 Fisher Road, Lafayette, La. 70508, and can be contacted at 337-232-0789 or 800-346-1958 / 800-543-5340 or by visiting their website.

Food

When someone says the words "Cajun" or "Creole" it is often associated with food. From our famous original dishes, including gumbo, jambalaya, po-boys, and etouffee, to our abundance of fresh seafood, the local culture is synonymous with foodways. The following links include a few of the many local restaurants that Lafayette has to offer, plus some other helpful links that will help in becoming familiar with our eating habits.
